    Thank you for sharing this, Dave. Crouch’s words strongly resonate with me, and I wish I had heard them earlier in my career. Years ago when I was a research manager, I was sent to a week-long leadership seminar in which the participants’ leadership styles were assessed using various tools. At the end of the seminar, I was told that my basic style was characterized by power. I argued with the seminar leader vehemently that his assessment was totally off-base since I knew that I was the opposite of the power-hungry leaders I had the “opportunity” to work with.

    Then, confirming Crouch’s thesis, the seminar leader explained that power can also mean power to the people. I realized that much of my time as manager was spent trying to remove organizational barriers from the chemists and engineers in my group so that they could be creative.
