PHILLISTINES!

Those who know me know that I like to use memory aids (mnemonic devices) in order to recall various things.  Years ago, I came up with the name “Gage” (pronounced/emphasized with a long a for the two “a” cities) to remember the five cities of the Phillistines.

This past Wednesday evening, I was reviewing various things and up came the five cities (Gath, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gaza, and Ekron) of the Phillistines.  I laughed because the very next day I was having lunch with my dear friend Cliff Wilson, who is a pilot for Southwest.  It turns out that Cliff’s son is named Gage (pictured below). Does he look like a Phillistine to you?  I think not!

SACRED SCRIPTURE, SACRED WAR

Wars are not simply military affairs.  For the Christian, they are theological to the core.   Mark Noll has made that clear with the various ways ministers interpreted the Civil War (see The Civil War as a Theological Crisis, University of North Carolina Press).

Last year, James Byrd of Vanderbilt released his Sacred Scripture, Sacred War: the Bible and the American Revolution (Oxford University Press).  It received a book of the year award from Christianity Today.

My interview with Professor Byrd of Vanderbilt appeared this past Saturday on JesusCreed:

WRITING FOR POSTERITY…EVERYONE CAN SO THEY SHOULD

The image is from Grant Horner’s Bible and it leads to a pleasant challenge for all of us.

How about writing in your Bible (and other places like journals) to leave a wonderful gift to your children, their children, and who knows whoever else!

Personally, I mark up four Bibles: two in English and two in Greek.  We have two sons so each will have somewhat of an idea of the things which struck me most.  I try to keep my penmanship fairly neat, but even when it is unclear what better gift could you give someone from your family?

My wife, Doreen, has a heavily marked up Bible, but because of smudges from the wrong kinds of writing instruments, some of the notes will only be known in eternity!

I was glad to see this post last year:

MISPLACED CONFIDENCE

I don’t think I’ve ever told anyone this, but I sure have thought it many times:

“You have an amazing confidence that your interpretation of an unclear teaching in Scripture is the correct one!”

I have painfully discovered that kooks are not the only ones with this confidence!

Correction: I can think of at least one person I’ve said this to!

A SHORT, WELL-LIVED LIFE!

Ronnie blessed our family with his compelling “history of redemption” which you can see in the second link below.

May God use Ronnie’s life and death to be a continuing witness of the greatness, joy, and wisdom of living for Jesus Christ alone.
