WHAT IS MISSING IN MANY CHRISTIAN BOOKSTORES?

Below are the categories one Christian bookstore lists for the books they carry. Having been in many Christian bookstores, the example below is not unique. There are some important categories that are missing.

I imagine that they have put history, theology, and apologetics under “academics,” but see what they are saying by doing so? These areas of study are viewed as a hobby of sorts for the more cerebral Christian. They are no longer viewed as areas that all Christians must study.

  • Christian Living
  • Children’s Books
  • Family & Relationships
  • Men’s Books
  • Church
  • Devotionals
  • Women’s Books
  • Charismatic
  • Spirituality
  • Personal Growth
  • Biographies & Autobiography
  • Arts & Photography
  • Poetry
  • Teen & Young Adult
  • Gift Books
  • Academics
  • Business & Investing

What you have noticed is HUGE. It reminds me of the literature selections utilized in the public high schools. A person is left ‘missing’ areas of study yet doesn’t even KNOW that anything IS missing. I SO appreciate your blog posts and suggestions for books to read because otherwise one is left to select from what is publicized rather than what is worthy of reading.

      Thanks Jeannie.

Most Christians bookstores I’ve been in discourage me. Life is hard, so I am always looking for resources that can offer perspective. I find very little in Christian bookstores.

Shameful. I can only surmise Christian store owners/managers are falling/being sucked into the same black hole as much of the rest of the world.

Things are different now? History isn’t relevant. Things happen faster these days. Why spend time on all that ancient stuff.

    Jibber jabber.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. However, at least the categories you list are all book categories. But what I miss in Bible book stores is simply BOOKS. Lately, it appears that over half of a Christian book store’s space is devoted to music CD’s, gift cards, candles, picture frames, and little toys for children. The rest of the store is filled with “Christian” fiction.

      Hey Dave,

Imagine Gutenberg showing up in many Christian homes today and trying to locate any substantial literature. He would probably find lots of candles and music!
