CAN I HANDLE THE TRUTH?

Four quotes from four of my favorite writers:

“To see what is in front of one’s nose needs a constant struggle.”

George Orwell

“Truth is so obscure in these times, and falsehood so established, that, unless we love the truth, we cannot know it.”

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

“Many of you have already found out and others will find out in the course of their lives that truth eludes us if we do not concentrate with total attention on its pursuit. And even while it eludes us, the illusion still lingers of knowing it and leads to many misunderstandings.”

Blaise Pascal

“Propaganda succeeds precisely to the extent that it provides us with a means of escaping reality.”

Jacques Ellul

These are some great quotes. This seems to flow very naturally with your soon to be available book on history. So much of what historical “facts” we are taught to believe become clouded by the bias of the historian. The 1921 massacre in Tulsa Black Wall St. was totally bypassed in my learning of American History. I only learned about it in past year or so. It’s a dilemma to try and find out how much history we’re taught is actually true or not. It’s certainly raises questions as Americans try to face the subtle [and not so subtle] racism that is celebrated with Civil War statues and names. As we rightly [in my opinion] remove these symbols or we making it easier to forget this history and deny its truth. Holocaust deniers fall into this same boat of selective history and subjective truth. Good bones to chew on for sure.

I wonder how much divisive bickering would quiesce if we as a people were dedicated truth rather than to victory. The pursuit of victory seems to make the plain truth opaque.

I think you are correct. As you well know, some non-Christians think the pursuit of power or victory as you said, is what animates most/all human activity. We may dismiss this because non-Christians are saying it, but I think there is much to consider. And yes, it clouds our desire to know the truth, especially when the truth is exposing unsavory things about US!
