Excellent discussion pointing out that Christians generally choose art (movies, books, music, visual arts, etc.) for its comfortable content rather than for its underlying message and artistic merits. Quite a while ago I taught a Sunday school lesson demonstrating that class members would chose Disney’s “Aladdin” over Kubrick’s “A Clockwork Orange” when I merely described the two films in terms of content (cute cartoon vs. gritty R+ rating). However, if I described the two in terms of their basic message, “A Clockwork Orange” came out overwhelmingly ahead of Disney. If we can’t look beyond the surface, then we might as well ban the Bible for its X-rated passages.
