Why do most “Christian” books fail to address suffering?

That question haunted Dave.
Many Christians devour the latest book “everyone is reading.” New secrets, steps, and
techniques are eagerly sought in an effort to escape the spiritual doldrums. Feverishly
doing this sort of thing results in spiritual immaturity at best, or worse still, abandoning the
Christian faith altogether.
Through teaching, discipleship, and counseling men, Dave noticed a serious problem. Most
Christians have not internalized what God’s Word has to say about suffering. As a result,
many are left flat-footed when suffering intersects their lives. To adapt Thoreau, Dave
wrote, “Too many people live lives of quiet desperation as they dutifully warm the church
pews.” God, What on Earth are You Doing?: An Honest Conversation is the forty-year result
of seeking to better understand how we are to trust God when suffering intersects our life.
