{"id":8618,"date":"2020-03-03T00:18:16","date_gmt":"2020-03-03T06:18:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.twocities.org\/?p=8618"},"modified":"2020-02-19T16:11:23","modified_gmt":"2020-02-19T22:11:23","slug":"what-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.twocities.org\/?p=8618","title":{"rendered":"WHAT CULTURE?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Decadent Society: How We Became the Victims of Our Own Success\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"625\" height=\"550\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"clipboard-write\" style=\"max-width:100%\" src=\"https:\/\/read.amazon.com\/kp\/card?asin=B07THDLJZL\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><strong>My interview with Ross Douthat on his provocative book will be posted soon.\u00a0 Stay tuned&#8230;<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>For now, consider some of my thoughts on culture:<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>When one speaks of &#8220;culture&#8221; it is easy to use that as shorthand for some kind of monolith.\u00a0 But culture is hardly monolithic.\u00a0 I like to ask, &#8220;What culture are you talking about?&#8221;\u00a0 Take &#8220;business&#8221; culture.\u00a0 Again, more accurate to say business cultures.\u00a0 Every business has its own philosophy and set of practices.\u00a0 Those make that particular business culture distinct.\u00a0 That separation is what marketers want.\u00a0 We are different and better than everyone else.\u00a0 Sameness is bad.\u00a0 The differences flush out in practical ways as well.\u00a0 So some business cultures are better for family life, some not so much.\u00a0 Business culture is just one type of category of culture and it is diverse as is every culture, whether that be the church or education.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Too many, including Christians, like to speak of a monolithic Culture because it makes it much easier to use sweeping, lacking in nuance statements.\u00a0 Nuance is not sexy.\u00a0 Too complex.
