{"id":4060,"date":"2014-05-27T00:00:30","date_gmt":"2014-05-27T05:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.twocities.org\/?p=4060"},"modified":"2014-05-26T13:17:41","modified_gmt":"2014-05-26T18:17:41","slug":"moore-reflections-on-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.twocities.org\/?p=4060","title":{"rendered":"MOORE REFLECTIONS ON WAR"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"irc_mi\" style=\"margin-top: 33px;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/d243395j6jqdl3.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/war-is-hell-cartoon.jpg\" width=\"468\" height=\"328\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>This past Sunday evening I was catching up with my dad. \u00a0It turned out both of us had seen a little bit of the annual show PBS does to honor the military. \u00a0My dad is a life-long conservative. \u00a0He and my mom were very involved in trying to get Barry Goldwater elected. \u00a0Even though I was young at the time, I still recall them going off \u00a0to a dinner party\/fundraiser for Goldwater at the Camelback resort.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In any case, my dad who served as an officer in the Navy during WWII is sick of war. \u00a0And so am I. \u00a0Both of us had to turn off the PBS special not because we don&#8217;t want to honor the soldiers, but because we don&#8217;t want to honor war. \u00a0And the former many times seems to bleed effortlessly over into the latter. \u00a0War is hell. \u00a0Those three words are pregnant with meaning. \u00a0Interestingly, it seems the ruthless William Tecumseh Sherman is responsible for coming up with the saying. \u00a0Here is one version of the quote. \u00a0It comes from an address Sherman gave in 1879 to the Michigan Military Academy:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;I\u2019ve been where you are now and I know just how you feel. It\u2019s entirely natural that there should beat in the breast of every one of you a hope and desire that some day you can use the skill you have acquired here.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> <i>Suppress it!<\/i>\u00a0You don\u2019t know the horrible aspects of war. I\u2019ve been through two wars and I know. I\u2019ve seen cities and homes in ashes. I\u2019ve seen thousands of men lying on the ground, their dead faces looking up at the skies.\u00a0I tell you, war is Hell!&#8221; (per Wikiquote)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It seems another General living about a century after Sherman ought to be considered more in these discussions. \u00a0I speak of General Dwight D.
