{"id":360,"date":"2013-04-30T00:00:45","date_gmt":"2013-04-30T05:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.twocities.org\/blog\/?p=360"},"modified":"2013-06-01T13:45:08","modified_gmt":"2013-06-01T18:45:08","slug":"the-skeptical-believer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.twocities.org\/?p=360","title":{"rendered":"HOMER SIMPSON&#8217;S INNER ATHEIST (PART 1)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"image\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/File:Homer_Simpson_2006.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Homer Simpson\" src=\"http:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/thumb\/0\/02\/Homer_Simpson_2006.png\/212px-Homer_Simpson_2006.png\" width=\"212\" height=\"347\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>I am grateful to Scot McKnight for bringing my attention to Daniel Taylor&#8217;s wonderful book, <em>The Skeptical Believer<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The title is terrific, but I like the subtitle even better: <em>Telling Stories to Your<\/em> <em>Inner Atheist<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Skeptical-Believer-Telling-Stories\/dp\/0970651155\/ref=tmm_pap_title_0\">http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/The-Skeptical-Believer-Telling-Stories\/dp\/0970651155\/ref=tmm_pap_title_0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"main-image\" style=\"display: inline; cursor: pointer;\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/ecx.images-amazon.com\/images\/I\/515%2BZZZZuXL._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_AA300_SH20_OU01_.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>There are far too many things I like about Dan&#8217;s book to do one post, so I am going to do several in the weeks ahead.\u00a0 Those who know me best understand why I would find so much resonance with <em>The Skeptical Believer.<\/em>\u00a0 You could say I am a &#8220;serial doubter.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Before we embark on Dan&#8217;s terrific book, let me say something about its design.\u00a0 Dan&#8217;s son, Matthew, designed the book.\u00a0 It is exquisitely and creatively put together.\u00a0 Even though it is beautifully done and almost 400 pages in length, the cost is only $14.95!<\/strong><\/p>\n<div><strong>Here then are a few things from the first section of Dan&#8217;s book (or about 70 pages):<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>*The quotes Dan provides at the beginning of each chapter are wisely selected.\u00a0 The book starts off with this gem by Miguel de Unamuno:<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>&#8220;Those who believe that they believe in God, but without any passion in their heart, without anguish of mind, without uncertainty, without doubt, without an element of despair even in their consolation, believe only in the idea of God, not in God Himself.&#8221;<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>*Many Christians feel the compulsion to act like the life of faith is easy and struggle minimal.\u00a0 Dan provides loads of wisdom and breathing room to be more honest with our nagging questions and doubts.\u00a0 And Dan offers humor throughout his book!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>*In his inimitable way, Dan does a great job of describing how the old faith v. reason conundrum is bogus.\u00a0 Others have demonstrated this as well, but Dan the literature professor and gifted writer offers us a fresh perspective.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>*<em>The Skeptical Believer<\/em> has one of the best explanations of the power of &#8220;story&#8221; that I have ever read.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>*Daniel Taylor isn&#8217;t interested in simply offering witty and well-written words about skepticism.\u00a0 He wants to help us.\u00a0 His section (I won&#8217;t tell you the page numbers because I want you to buy the book) on dealing with what he likes to call &#8220;clutter&#8221; rather than busyness is one of my favorite parts in the first section.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I am grateful to Scot McKnight for bringing my attention to Daniel Taylor&#8217;s wonderful book, The Skeptical Believer.
