{"id":2669,"date":"2013-11-14T00:00:37","date_gmt":"2013-11-14T06:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.twocities.org\/?p=2669"},"modified":"2013-11-14T06:42:39","modified_gmt":"2013-11-14T12:42:39","slug":"liberals-and-conservatives-both-avoid-thee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.twocities.org\/?p=2669","title":{"rendered":"LIBERALS AND CONSERVATIVES BOTH AVOID THEE!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbimage\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/commons.orthodoxwiki.org\/images\/thumb\/c\/c5\/Clemens_I.jpg\/250px-Clemens_I.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"331\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>In my fairly diverse reading, it is striking how few times I will see any mention of some of the earliest witnesses of the Christian faith. \u00a0 I am speaking of the early Church fathers who wrote right after the time of the apostles. \u00a0And this common neglect is found among both so-called liberals (or progressives) and so-called conservatives.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why the neglect?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I am not entirely sure, but Lesslie Newbigin&#8217;s terrific book,\u00a0<em>Proper Confidence<\/em>, may provide a clue. \u00a0Newbigin believed both liberals and conservatives derived their understanding of reason from the Enlightenment. \u00a0Liberals, according to Newbigin, tend to believe the Christian faith can never be proven by reason, while conservatives tend to believe the Christian faith can be proven mainly by reason. \u00a0Both have forgotten what the Scriptures say about the nature of faith. \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Many conservatives need to be reminded that we now see in a &#8220;mirror dimly,&#8221; while many liberals need to appreciate we can still have confidence that the resurrected body of Jesus is <em>a well-founded hope<\/em>. \u00a0In <em>The\u00a0Reason for God<\/em>, \u00a0Tim Keller (perhaps somewhat ironic because of the title), does a fine job reminding us that we all utilize faith along with our reason(s). \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Church fathers can help us with these matters. \u00a0They understood that our understanding now is partial, but they were still confident it was true.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you want to learn more, I recommend reading a primary source and a secondary one.\u00a0<em>The<\/em>\u00a0<em>Apostolic Fathers<\/em>\u00a0(the edition by Michael Holmes is the latest, but the edition by J.B.
