Over the years I have read hundreds of r\u00e9sum\u00e9s.\u00a0\u00a0 Actually, it is probably more than that.\u00a0 In any case, between interviewing many people on radio and TV, I have also given input to some churches on pastoral searches.\u00a0 Recently, I evaluated dozens of r\u00e9sum\u00e9s for a preaching pastor position.\u00a0 Here are a few things which you may want to share with a friend who is applying for a pastoral position:<\/strong><\/p>\n

*First impressions are huge.\u00a0 I was amazed by how poorly several of the r\u00e9sum\u00e9s looked.\u00a0 The lack of attention to aesthetics was shocking.\u00a0 I am not advocating lots of fancy stuff.\u00a0 I am saying that using Courier font and inconsistent borders is not quite passing muster.<\/strong><\/p>\n

*The lack of good writing was painful to see.\u00a0 Poor writing for someone going into a preaching ministry is troubling.<\/strong><\/p>\n

*The word passion is way overused.\u00a0 When I see someone has a \u201cpassion\u201d for this or that, I grow impatient. \u00a0I beg pastors to use some other word.<\/strong><\/p>\n

*Family is listed as hobby and many times not even the first one!\u00a0 Some put family under a category called \u201cinterests,\u201d but the same problem remains.\u00a0 I have seen too many put gardening and golf or reading and travel on the same list as family!<\/strong><\/p>\n

*No reason is given for leaving a particular church.\u00a0 One candidate who was candid about the reason for leaving his previous position was put at the top of my pile.<\/strong><\/p>\n

*Stop using trivialities, sloganeering, platitudes, and playing to the crowd.\u00a0 Since this last church I helped leans toward dispensationalism it was painful to read the pandering descriptions of how committed some candidates are to this particular system of theology.<\/strong><\/p>\n

*No references given from previous church.<\/strong><\/p>\n

*Stop saying the predictable \u201cmy wife is the most beautiful and my children are simply amazing.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

*Dates of experience have gaps and these are not explained.<\/strong><\/p>\n
