{"id":1022,"date":"2013-05-26T00:00:35","date_gmt":"2013-05-26T05:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.twocities.org\/?p=1022"},"modified":"2013-05-26T00:21:25","modified_gmt":"2013-05-26T05:21:25","slug":"learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.twocities.org\/?p=1022","title":{"rendered":"THREE PICTURES OF LEARNING"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>During my radio interview with historian, Martin Marty, I shared something with him which he found helpful. \u00a0We were not talking about historical matters, but grief. \u00a0I was interviewing Professor Marty on a book he wrote about his first wife&#8217;s death from cancer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>After the interview, I realized my reflections also related to learning.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The three diagrams below represent various ways we may conceive of the learning process.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The circle emphasizes that &#8220;repetition is the key to learning&#8221; because we are always coming back to things we thought we learned. \u00a0The problem is that there is no movement forward. \u00a0True learning means that we are growing in our knowledge. \u00a0A circle depicts the repetitious nature of learning okay, but not the dynamic of progress.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"rg_l\" style=\"width: 184px; height: 179px; margin-left: -3px; margin-top: 0px;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com\/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQz-FyZK9KaDe1ocZUfGCv7_xjAaP1fqnKrjHe9_qY8_JukfKgYBg\" name=\"kk78vKoC2rQfRM:\" data-sz=\"f\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The second graph shows an arrow moving forward. \u00a0It reflects progression which is good, but it fails to depict that learning involves reviewing former things we&#8217;ve learned or going back to earlier lessons and seeing fresh insight there. \u00a0Progression simply in a linear direction is not a good example of how the best learning takes place.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"rg_l\" style=\"width: 330px;
