{"id":1014,"date":"2013-05-24T00:00:35","date_gmt":"2013-05-24T05:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.twocities.org\/?p=1014"},"modified":"2020-03-26T19:55:27","modified_gmt":"2020-03-27T00:55:27","slug":"1014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.twocities.org\/?p=1014","title":{"rendered":"BORED WITH GOD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"rg_l\" style=\"width: 198px; height: 168px; left: 1px;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/imgres?um=1&amp;client=firefox-a&amp;sa=N&amp;rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&amp;hl=en&amp;biw=732&amp;bih=591&amp;tbm=isch&amp;tbnid=M-TwyRWz67Q8KM:&amp;imgrefurl=http:\/\/depositphotos.com\/8740050\/stock-photo-Businessman-drinking-coffee-while-reading-his-documents.html&amp;docid=Q73bIUp-dt6lPM&amp;imgurl=http:\/\/static8.depositphotos.com\/1258938\/874\/i\/950\/depositphotos_8740050-Businessman-drinking-coffee-while-reading-his-documents.jpg&amp;w=950&amp;h=830&amp;ei=5oKdUZbIDZS34AOP5IHICQ&amp;zoom=1&amp;ved=1t:3588,r:10,s:0,i:113&amp;iact=rc&amp;dur=1440&amp;page=2&amp;tbnh=168&amp;tbnw=198&amp;start=7&amp;ndsp=10&amp;tx=123&amp;ty=58\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rg_i\" style=\"width: 198px; height: 173px; margin-left: 0px; margin-top: -5px;\" src=\"https:\/\/encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com\/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR-pVnDHQ9t8T1saF2ohh2lWVX6BHFyIomn_9fhr6I-o2o_0iHv\" alt=\"\" name=\"M-TwyRWz67Q8KM:\" data-sz=\"f\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Consider someone I will call \u201cTom.\u201d\u00a0 Tom is a guy I know.\u00a0 He is a nice guy who dutifully has attended church for many years.\u00a0 I\u2019m afraid to report that all Tom\u2019s church attendance still leaves him with a pretty thin understanding of the Christian faith.\u00a0 He is surrounded by opportunities to grow in his understanding of the Christian faith (as are all of us Americans), but they don\u2019t capture his imagination.\u00a0 Tom complains that he is too busy with work plus he says he has adult Attention Deficit Disorder (commonly called ADD).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>So what do you think Tom does when the opportunity presents itself to take an intensive course in his field?\u00a0 To take the course he must spend thousands of dollars, live away from home for several weeks, and take several months to digest a thick binder of technical information before he heads off to New York City.\u00a0 He jumps at the chance with gusto and clearly has a focused determination to push himself intellectually.\u00a0 Tom unabashedly tells several of us that the course will give him an edge which will most likely increase his already considerable salary.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>We may be tempted to assume our day and age presents a unique challenge to learning because of ever-present media and the pull toward immediate gratification.\u00a0 Consider the words of Puritan pastor, Richard Baxter, to the men in his congregation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Were you as but willing to get the knowledge of God and heavenly things as you are to know how to work in your trade, you would have set it to yourself before this day, and you would have spared no cost or pains till you had got it.\u00a0 But you account seven years little enough to learn your trade, and will not bestow one day in seven in diligent learning the matters of your salvation.&#8221;<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>And J.I. Packer notes this was a \u201cworking-class congregation.\u201d<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn2\">[2]<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Down the ages everyone has always been tempted to wander from God.\u00a0 Some are more honest than others like Augustine who confessed to finding Cicero&#8217;s writings more compelling than Scripture.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>There is nothing new under the sun.\u00a0 Believing that we have such unusual temptations to keep us from learning is a dodge each one of us must be honest about.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<hr align=\"left\" size=\"1\" width=\"33%\" \/>\n<div>\n<p><strong><a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a>As quoted in\u00a0 J.I.
